Looking for a great opportunity to photograph Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula?

Join Lou & Todd Nettelhorst in this six day, late summer workshop to explore incredible photo opportunities in the Olympic Peninsula. This area, bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca is anchored by the Olympic Mountains. No other place in America provides three distinct environments in such a small geographic area. The flora and fauna of the wild rocky coasts and pebble beaches, lush moss-draped rainforests and soaring snow-clad mountains with extensive alpine meadows provide wonderful photo experiences. Some of the great locations (conditions permitting) are: Hurricane Ridge; Lake Crescent; Salt Creek Recreation Area; Sol Duc Falls; Hoh Rainforest; and Ruby, Rialto and Kalaloch Beaches. The team arrives early to scout and help find the most desirable shooting locations. During these various shooting experiences, we provide coaching and also offer numerous critiquing sessions and lessons in a classroom setting. The home base will start in Port Angeles and move to Forks, Washington. The workshop is informal, relaxing, and a fun way to learn.

PLEASE JOIN US!!

All of Lou and Todd’s workshops, outings, classes and lessons include Lou’s learning cycle, which is to provide INFORMATION, give opportunities to PRACTICE using the information, and then receive FEEDBACK on the practice results. It’s all about the fun of learning by doing. We’re discovering and exploring your artist within!!

ABOUT THE LEADERS

Lou Nettelhorst is an accomplished, artistic photographer who shares his extensive knowledge on revealing nature’s beauty through workshops, seminars, classrooms, publications, and exhibitions. A photo editor summed up Lou’s photographs as follows, “Intensity, powerful color, bouncing form, and dramatic, emotional play characterize Lou’s creative photographic style. As a viewer, you’ll want to crawl into Lou’s scenes and become one with the flora and fauna!”

Todd Nettelhorst is also an accomplished, artistic photographer, as well. His charismatic energy and unique photographic perspective is very contagious. He has a passion for the visual arts and helping others bring out the best in their creative abilities.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is designed to accommodate all levels of photographic experience. It is important, however, that participants be familiar with their equipment and its operation.

EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

A digital SLR camera with a battery of lenses that may capture wide-angle to telephoto and macro subjects and a sturdy tripod are recommended. If you don’t have a macro lens, using extension tubes are a wonderful substitute. A polarizing filter is a good idea to cut glare off the leaves and enrich the color. A Hoodman loupe allows you to see your LCD screen without glare. A head lamp or flashlight is a must for walking trails before sunrises and after sunsets. For downloading, storing and providing images for critiques, you’ll need a laptop, external hardrive and USB flashdrive. Other accessories suggested are: blower and lens cloth, extra batteries and plenty of flash or memory cards, diffusion disk and reflector, remote control, flashlight, sun screen, knee pads and a ground cloth. Bring your equipment in a backpack or carry it in a vest. BTW: newer camera phones can take excellent photos and video, as well. More detailed equipment information is provided by email after registration. Understand that our equipment recommendations, are just that, recommendations. We’ll work with what you bring.

DRESS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Because of the varying environments, weather can be quite unpredictable, coming prepared for combinations of wet, dry, cold and warm conditions is advised. Remember the locations are in three distinctly, different environments, i.e., sub alpine, seashore and rain forest. Be sure to check the forecast and dress accordingly (Weather). This is an outdoor nature photo workshop, so general good health and fitness will help maximize one’s comfort and enjoyment. Planned activities should be well within the ability of people in moderate to good shape. Most locations are accessible from the road, but there are a number of hikes to reach locations, which are less than a mile one way and on somewhat varying terrain. The Olympic coast is rocky, so participants will on occasion encounter areas that are potentially uneven and slippery, but avoiding anything inherently dangerous. Of course, as with any outdoor activity, there is some associated risk from terrain, inclement weather, and other outdoor hazards.
