Would you love to see thousands of Virginia Blues and then photograph them, plus you can get coaching?

Beginning of May is the perfect time to shoot in acres of Virginia Blue Bells. Of course, the flowers available depend on the arrival time of spring. There’s always many varieties of spring wildflowers for our shooting pleasure. They’re such GREAT subjects!!

Our outing is in Messenger Woods Nature Preserve of Will County. Lou and Todd Nettelhorst will provide individualized coaching as you explore your own photographic styles.

During the prior week, they scout to determine the best locations for shooting the flowers.  Then, the participants are given final instructions by email the week before the outing. If convenient, carpooling to the photographic site is encouraged.

Following the Outing, on Tuesday evening, May 30th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, Lou and Todd will host an online critique/feedback session, discussing sample images from each participant.  Instructions for uploading your jpg images and signing on are provided to the participants following the Outing.

All of Lou and Todd’s workshops, outings, classes and lessons include Lou’s learning cycle, which is to provide INFORMATION, give opportunities to PRACTICE using the information, and then receive FEEDBACK on the practice results. It’s all about the fun of learning by doing. We’re discovering and exploring your artist within!!

ABOUT THE LEADER

Lou Nettelhorst is an accomplished, artistic photographer who shares his extensive knowledge on revealing nature’s beauty through workshops, seminars, classrooms, publications, and exhibitions. A photo editor summed up Lou’s photographs as follows, “Intensity, powerful color, bouncing form, and dramatic, emotional play characterize Lou’s creative photographic style. As a viewer, you’ll want to crawl into Lou’s scenes and become one with the flora and fauna!”

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is designed to accommodate all levels of photographic experience. It is important, however, that participants be familiar with their equipment and its operation.

EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

A digital SLR camera with a battery of lenses that may capture wide-angle to telephoto and macro subjects and a sturdy tripod are recommended. If you don’t have a macro lens, using extension tubes are a wonderful substitute. A polarizing filter is a good idea to cut glare off the leaves and enrich the color. A Hoodman loupe allows you to see your LCD screen without glare. Other accessories suggested are: blower and lens cloth, extra batteries and plenty of flash or memory cards, diffusion disk and reflector, remote control, flashlight, sun screen, knee pads and a ground cloth. Equipment carts will not work because of the unevenness of the trails. Bring your equipment in a backpack or carry it in a vest. BTW: newer camera phones can take excellent photos and video, as well.

DRESS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

In the spring, weather is quite variable. Be sure to check the forecast and dress accordingly. Waterproof shoes or boots above the ankles are recommended because the ground is in a flood plain for the surrounding creeks and usually wet. Also, we may walk across some shallow creek beds. Wellies are ideal, if you happen to have them. Moderate physical condition is recommended because of the maneuvering required to traverse the trails. For example, sometimes paths may have some tree trunks across them requiring us to step over them.

TRANSPORTATION and MEALS

Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the outing. We recommend that you bring water, some snacks, even a sandwich for lunch.
