These patterns can be found in both man-made and natural environments. Mastering this type of photography involves not just finding interesting patterns but also using composition, lighting, and perspective to create visually striking photos.

Here’s a breakdown of key aspects:

• Types of Patterns:
  • Geometric: Straight lines, circles, squares, etc. (e.g., brick walls, tile floors)
  • Organic: Natural, free-flowing patterns (e.g., flowers, leaves, rock formations)
  • Abstract: Patterns not readily identifiable as objects (e.g., shadows, reflections, cracks)
  • Repeating: Elements consistently repeating throughout the frame (e.g., stripes, polka dots)
  • Symmetrical: Balanced and mirrored patterns (e.g., buildings, butterfly wings)
  • Color: Patterns created by variations in color (e.g., painted walls, stained glass)
• Composition:
  • Rule of Thirds: Divide the frame into a 3×3 grid and position the pattern at the intersections for a balanced composition.
  • Leading Lines: Use lines within the pattern to draw the viewer’s eye through the image.
  • Fill the Frame: Get close to the pattern to eliminate distracting elements and emphasize the details.
  • Negative Space: Utilize the empty space around the pattern to create a sense of balance and focus.
• Lighting:
  • Side Lighting: Emphasizes texture and depth within the pattern.

  • Shoot straight on: May be suitable for symmetrical patterns.
  • Try different angles: Can add dynamism and reveal hidden details in some patterns.

EXAMPLES:

• Geometric: Close-up of a honeycomb showcasing its hexagonal pattern.
• Organic: A field of wildflowers displaying a vibrant color and shape pattern.
• Abstract: Reflections of buildings on a window creating a distorted geometric pattern.
• Repeating: A row of colorful houses with identical architectural features.
• Symmetrical: The reflection of a snow-capped mountain in a lake, creating a mirror image.

FIELD ASSIGNMENTS:

(Use phone, point & shoot, dslr, mirrorless camera and/or drone)

Level 1:

• Find five different patterns in your neighborhood (geometric, organic, abstract, etc.) and capture each one. Pay attention to how the lighting and angle affect the look of the pattern.

Level 2:

• Visit a local market or store and photograph various textures and patterns found on fabrics, fruits, or other objects. Experiment with different compositions (rule of thirds, leading lines) to create visually appealing images.

Level 3:

• Choose a specific theme (e.g., patterns in nature, architecture, everyday objects) and create a photo series showcasing different types of patterns within that theme. Consider incorporating negative space and contrasting colors to enhance the impact of your photographs.

Remember, practice is key! The more you experiment with photographing patterns, the better you will become at identifying them, using composition techniques, and utilizing lighting to create captivating images.
